When a server goes down at a technology company, nobody expects the on-call engineer to find out by walking past a blinking light. Platforms like PagerDuty, ServiceNow, and Opsgenie route the alert automatically, escalate if it goes unacknowledged, and log the entire response timeline. IT has operated this way for over a decade.

Manufacturing has not. In most plants, the alarm fires on a SCADA screen, and the rest of the response depends on whoever happens to be nearby. That gap is not an oversight. It reflects a real difference in how OT systems evolved: monitoring was automated, but response management was left to human processes and tribal knowledge.

Critical event management (CEM) is the category label for closing that gap. It is the structured workflow that connects alarm detection to documented human response, and it is moving from IT into manufacturing because the cost of not having it is now too large to absorb.

CEM Is a Workflow, Not a Feature

CEM compresses the human response portion. It does not prevent equipment failures, but it ensures the right responder knows about them within seconds, not minutes, and that escalation happens automatically if the first response path fails.
